EPG check: why is the TV guide empty?

A guide that shows “no information” for half the channels is not a broken player — it is a missing link between the channel and the XMLTV record. This tool loads both files, reports the coverage ratio, tells you whether the match came from tvg-id or from the channel name, and lists the channels that have no guide at all.

Load playlist + guide (EPG)

Load your M3U playlist and the XMLTV guide and see, channel by channel, which ones have a guide and which tvg-id is missing or wrong. .gz compressed guides are supported.

Load both sources, then press “Match”.

How the matching works

  1. 1. Load the playlist and the guide

Provide the M3U and the XMLTV file (a file or a link). Xtream panels usually expose the guide at xmltv.php?username=…&password=…; providers may also give you epg.xml or epg.xml.gz. Compressed guides are supported.

  2. 2. Read the coverage ratio

Coverage is the share of channels that found a guide entry. The report also splits by matching method, so you can see whether tvg-id is doing the work or whether the tool had to fall back to names — the second is weaker and worth fixing.

  3. 3. Review the channels without a guide

Those are the ones showing an empty programme list. Before touching anything, check whether the provider sends an incomplete guide or whether your playlist simply lacks ids.

  4. 4. Accept the suggestions you trust

For missing tvg-id the tool proposes matches with at least 60% name similarity. Nothing changes until you press “Fixed M3U”, and channels that already have an id are never modified.

  5. 5. Export and re-check

Download the corrected M3U and load it in the player. If coverage improved but a few channels still fail, their names probably differ too much — fix those ids manually from the provider’s EPG list.

What causes an empty guide

  • • Empty or wrong tvg-id — A channel like “TRT 1” needs trt1.tr in an Xtream guide; without it the player cannot link the two.
  • • Name mismatch — Fallback matching compares names, so “TRT 1 HD” may not find “TRT 1”. Fixing the id is more reliable than renaming channels.
  • • Guide covers other channels — The XMLTV file may be for a different country or provider; check the coverage before you edit the playlist.
  • • Too much similarity risk — Suggestions below 60% similarity are not proposed at all — a wrong guide is worse than an empty one.

Why nothing is applied automatically

EPG ids are foreign keys: a wrong one shows the wrong programme with total confidence, which is harder to notice than an empty list. That is why the tool proposes and you confirm. The guide is parsed as a stream — only channel ids, names and programme counts stay in memory — so even a 100 MB XMLTV file is processed without loading it whole. Files stay in the browser; a linked guide is fetched through a stateless proxy and not stored.

FAQ

Where do I find my EPG address?+

On Xtream panels it is usually http://server:port/xmltv.php?username=…&password=…. Otherwise your provider gives an epg.xml or epg.xml.gz link; both plain and gzipped guides are accepted.

Will the tool fix my tvg-id values?+

It proposes ids above 60% name similarity and only applies them when you press “Fixed M3U”. Channels that already have an id are left untouched.

My guide file is huge — will the browser cope?+

Yes. The XMLTV is parsed as a stream and only ids, names and programme counts are kept, so a 100 MB file uses very little memory.

Coverage looks low even after fixing — why?+

Usually the guide itself is incomplete or for another region. Compare the guide’s channel count with your playlist, and ask the provider whether they send a full XMLTV file.
